Future Paths
Exiting university, I have accumulated skills I can utilize in many different areas. As I have said before, my safe space throughout university has been sound design for film, which I now wish to deviate from. Designing sound for films is something that I love, but not something I see myself doing my whole life. Obviously, with this sort of practice, it is hard to be doing one single thing anyway, but personally, I don’t want to be stuck behind a computer screen for how I wish to execute my work and my own vision. After helping out with so many performances this year, I feel I understand the backings of these sorts of events to be able to work my practice in that direction. I have connections with a few different music/performance managers who I have begun to work with in hopes that I can begin to accumulate projects in these areas. This is one aspect I wish I had more opportunity and time to develop, for it was not something implemented into our curriculum often. As I have said before as well, I also hope to push my portfolio into more of a fine art direction in terms of focusing on sound installations and sonic sculptures as well. With this, I can work towards contacting galleries, and finding different exhibitions I could potentially become a part of, but right now it is hard to say for not all of the work I want is there yet. I feel as if I am working towards all these things now, but with my current portfolio there are still plenty of projects I can take part in. I have been exploring opportunities to collaborate with other artists and search for other potential areas of work with my current portfolio. I think that working with others from in different creative backgrounds brings fresh perspectives and new ideas that can enhance my practice further. This sort of collaborations can take many forms; joint performances and installations to co-creating video projects and composing soundtracks. I have always been interested in finding opportunities to work in sound design for the video games industry, and I think with what I have now I can explore this idea more. I’ve always had a love for video games, and I think that sound design is an under-appreciated practice that literally creates the immersive and engaging gaming experiences. I don’t quite know how to break into this industry quite yet, but this is definitely an idea I wish to pursue. In conclusion, I feel excited and optimistic about the future of my artistic practice. While I still have much to learn and achieve, I am confident that the work I have put into this practice over the last four years in university will lead me to new opportunities. I am grateful for the education and experiences that I have gained in university, and I look forward to putting them to use in the real world.
