Bishi Bhattacharya

Bishi is a British-Bengali artist who works in the mediums of sound, performance, AI visuals, and much more. Having roots in queer performance art, sitar playing, and musical background, Bishi defines herself easily as a multi-disciplined artist with a clear image. Her work is vibrant both sonically and visually. As she began to explain her work in the lecture, a piece that stuck out to me was Albion Voice, a piece essentially targeting her relationship with her home, Karkata, as a British-Bengali woman where she used colonial imagery to explain her fractured relationship with the British Empire. When Bishi spoke about her past and current work, I found it very appropriate and relatable for what I am working on/plan on starting. An aspect I want to begin incorporating into my work is performance, but at the moment I am just figuring out how I want to approach this area. Bishi spoke of using her body as an instrument in her sound and performance work which I think is an idea that I can use within my future work. Another method I started looking into was her method of improvisation with the Ableton Push 2. I have a push and though I use it for almost all of my work, she used it a different way which I am excited to approach and add into my process potentially. I plan to do a couple full improvisations with sound/guitar/vocals on video and see what happens with these ideas.
