The Use of Sound in Paprika

The Use of Sound in Paprika

Following the concept of terrorism through dreams, Susumu Hirasawa this film took this psychedelic theme and translated it into a bubbly, consistent, and authentic soundtrack. Paprika is often noted for being one of the first films to include Vocaloid through the soundtrack. With this, I can see relations to the emerging sub-genre, hyperpop. The key scenes in this film are paired perfectly to their sound, specifically, the intro scene sets the standard for the entire film. Mediational Field proves itself as the most unforgettable. Not only because of its’ melody remaining throughout the soundtrack but by the way it combines surreal dreamlike textures with reality, which is parallel to the films’ premise. By using the same distinctive sounds throughout the film (chopped opera vocals, vocaloid, glitchy video game synths, reverbed piano) it creates a bridge to the animation that syncs seamlessly. All synths used throughout the film run through the Commodore Amiga 4000, creating an energetic and futuristic atmosphere. While these synths and vocals are being used, the sound design still takes advantage of orchestral arrangements, making the designs sound triumphant. Hirasawa delivers unconventional sound work that is jarring, unique, and memorable.
