Specialist Studies: Labyrinth Project
Description
For this project, we were told to create something following the idea of what a labyrinth is at its core. One of the key things we were shown was the difference between a labyrinth and a maze. In a maze, there are many different paths that lead you away from the final destination, in a labyrinth, this is not the case. A labyrinth is a single path that twists and turns, the difference between these two being that a maze has multiple paths, a labyrinth simply has one. We were shown examples depicting how can be executed in many different ways.
Project Initial Idea
Our idea is to create a labyrinth of the mind depicted through paths people take like streets, sidewalks, hallways, but showing them in an incomplete way, a way that blocks the end. For example, a street but you cannot see the end of it, it is your mind’s job to assume it has an end. To heighten the confusion of the mind, create a video where everything is edited very intensely and strongly that is overwhelming, causing the viewer to dive deeper into the ‘mind labyrinth. The actual labyrinth is the attempt to try to figure out what is going on. With this, we will create a story where the viewer will understand that the mind is the labyrinth we are using.
Storyboard & Research
For the storyboard, we wished to present a person where we zoom into their head to show the labyrinth inside, of memories, emotions, etc. Often with these emotions, people associate movies, tv shows, or music (and more), all of which we can find on our own and the internet to use within what we are trying to depict. The first emotion we wanted to depict was fear, showing what we might associate with said emotion. From this, a transition traveling through an endless pathway of some sort. With this idea, I referenced from Caroline Polachek’s music video for ‘Door’ where multiple seemingly endless paths are shown. After this transition move into joy and sadness (with transitions in between), where the video concludes as you zoom out of the persons’ head, leaving the labyrinth that is their mind. For each emotion, my group listed off something we can associate with each emotion, I will leave a few links below.
