Mail Art: Specialist Studies

Description
Moving into our new specialist studies segment, our first assignment presented a challenge for me. The briefing of this project is mail art, an art movement started in the 1950s/’60s. Mail art, from my understanding, is art an art form focused on being sent from one person to another through the postal service, creating a new form of sharing (at the time). For the project, we are required to stem from an accomplishment of ours and create a piece of mail to send, updating someone (anyone) on said accomplishment. To assist us in this concept, we created a mind map on an accomplishment(s) we have achieved in our time here at LCC. (seen in featured image)
Project Idea
Planning on moving into sound arts, this project took more planning both technically and conceptually. The idea of sending a voicemail through physical mail service I found quite ironic and comical, so this is the seed for my concept. With this, I had to think of a way to create a sound piece that is both audible and tangible. This in mind, I thought of USBs, CDs, and landed on the idea of a cassette. On said cassette, I will burn my “voicemail”, after editing it accordingly to my concept, onto it and proceed to design my cassette to match what a piece of mail might look like. I’m still working on who I am writing to, or what accomplishment I am talking about, but technically, I am prepared.
