Collections Draft (Iteration 1)
Concept
In working on this project conceptually, I was inspired by the Archangel Jeremial, the angelic representation of new beginnings and hope. Applying this to myself, moving from the U.S. to London has presented me with nothing less than a new beginning. My daily life in the past has almost completely shifted to what I do on a normal basis now, making this project a prime outlet for me to depict this feeling. In collecting these sounds, I focused on recording things that I do daily, now that I have begun anew. Roughly twelve sounds are contained within this collection, all distorted in some way. I chose to manipulate the sounds this way because, in a way, I feel distorted too. Still adjusting to the environment around me I find myself feeling contorted at times, which I attempted to reflect in my collection.
Description
Shrouding the entirety of the collection, the sound of cars and rain hitting pavement is placed to create a soundscape in representation of what London might sound like on a normal basis. In the first recording, the sound of bedsheets shifting is contained, the beginning of my (and most people’s) days. Moving forward, the next two recordings, I captured musicians on the street. The contrast in the two interested me, one is a loud, synthesized sound that to me translates a bit stressful. The other is a light guitar that is calm and serene. The next two recordings I found inside and outside the London College of Communication building, a location I visit daily. The first being the sounds of my walk from accommodation to class, the second from inside the canteen at lunchtime. Following these two, a recording from one of my lectures is placed. For this, I cut the overarching rain for the moment, to focus on the lecture, like I would if I were there. Closing out this collection, the final two I recorded from my room. The first being an ambient synth I constructed from working on a personal sound piece. The final recording can be heard echoing quietly throughout the duration of the collections but can be heard clearly at the end. To tie the concept to the piece itself a bit more, I did research on the archangel Jeremiel and found a prayer targetting his representations, which can be heard in the final recording.
Prayer
‘Grant me the insight and wisdom to understand God’s plan for me, that I might reconcile my emotions with the reward that God has planned for me. Jeremiel please help me to remember my dreams and decipher the wisdom encoded within them — I look forward to any messages that ordain for me. Help me move forward on an evolutionary path. With great thanks, I pray.’ Help me move forward on an evolutionary path. With great thanks, I pray.’
The file size is too large so I uploaded the piece to SoundCloud, link below.
