Orientation: conversations Final Draft

Description

The script for this animation was written from a transcribed conversation we recorded in a department store in the shopping centre. Since the conversation had no context to it, we took creative justice with it. To summarize the story, the angel is bargaining with the devil over an unknown object to the viewer at first, later finding out it is a cute frog. The goal for the animation was to achieve a dark/evil feel while still maintaining a cute element.

Process

In our final draft, Sunny, Lynn, and I decided to make an animation/ stop motion to accompany the conversation we recorded. Putting this together, we met to sketch and color the story boards Lynn drew out the previous night. Once we documented everything we worked on together, Lynn was going to put everything together on photoshop and send me the final video for me to apply sound. In seeing the final video, my first thought was that it oddly reminded me of a boss battle from a video game.

Research

With this idea, I did some research into Nobuo Uematsu, who did the soundtracks for most of the early Final Fantasy games. Uematsu is one of the early composers for video games, so most of his pieces are very glitchy, 64-bit, computerized pieces. I tried to make this feel in my own piece for this project. Along with the sound I constructed, I sampled an evil laugh and frog croaks, to fit the story more.

Reflection

With this project, I found myself doing the things I want to do in the future. Having a visual piece to work with, and still having the ability to weave sound into it. I found myself more and more excited to continue this project now that I had the opportunity to work with sound and still be able to have a visual.
